Stepping Into Sexual Violence – Our Journey in Trying to Get it Right Enough

Sexual violence is pervasive and our legal system is failing survivors, perpetrators, and the community in providing a response that leads to justice, healing, and addressing the causes of these harms. Receiving referrals from the criminal legal system, community members, and agencies, Restorative Justice Victoria (RJV) has been working with sexual violence since 2012 and has handled almost 100 cases. Gillian will share RJV’s experience over the past 12 years and how they have navigated the unique complexities of these cases. She will advocate for moving away from an incident-based approach and explore how understanding sexual violence in a systemic way can support both survivors and perpetrators within accountability processes. Gillian will share some of the challenging learnings she and her team have confronted and how those have shaped their current work, as well as stories of healing and hope and what participant experiences can tell us about why restorative justice offers an essential path to justice for sexual violence.
